Medical Illustration | Disc Herniations C3-4, C4-5 and L2-3, L3-4

Case Type:

Motor Vehicle

Area of Injury:

Spine, Shoulder and Knees

Overall Objective:

Attorney Robert Borrero from Jacoby & Meyers needed help illustrating the multiple injuries his client sustained from a car collision. The client was a passenger in the vehicle when it was hit by another car while making a turn at an intersection.

Our Work on the Case

Exhibit 1

Surgical illustration showing an overview of the injuries to the spine, shoulder and knees.

Exhibit 2

Surgical illustration showing disc bulges at C3-4 and C4-5, disc herniation at C5-6, and osteophyte/bone spur development of the cervical spine at C5-C6.

Exhibit 3

Surgical illustration with MRI overlays showing disc bulges L2-3, L3-4 and disc herniation at L4-5 of the lumbar spine.

Exhibit 4

Surgical illustration showing the 1st step in repairing the C5-6 herniated disc. The operation is a cervical discectomy and fusion at C5 with excision of herniated disc at C5 C6, spinal cord and nerve root decompression, excision of osteophytes at C5 C6 with a fusion using left iliac crest bone graft.

Exhibit 5

Surgical illustration showing the 2nd step in repairing the C5-6 herniated disc. The operation is a cervical discectomy and fusion at C5 with excision of herniated disc at C5 C6, spinal cord and nerve root decompression, excision of osteophytes at C5 C6 with a fusion using left iliac crest bone graft.

Exhibit 6

Surgical illustration showing the 1st step in repairing the L4 L5 disc with radiculopathy. The operation is a minimally invasive anterolateral discectomy, decompression with interbody arthrodesis with allograft and bone marrow aspirate with posterior decompression and posterolateral fusion stabilization with allograft and bone marrow aspirate.

Exhibit 7

Surgical illustration showing the 2nd step in repairing the L4 L5 disc with radiculopathy. The operation is a minimally invasive anterolateral discectomy, decompression with interbody arthrodesis with allograft and bone marrow aspirate with posterior decompression and posterolateral fusion stabilization with allograft and bone marrow aspirate.

Exhibit 8

Surgical illustration showing preop lumbar spine condition.

Exhibit 9

Surgical illustration showing lumbar spondylosis at L2-3 and L3-4 with adjacent level syndrome with mechanical back pain, and radicular pain. The operation is an anterior L3-4 and L2-3 extensive discectomy decompression, and anterior interbody arthrodesis.

Exhibit 10

Surgical illustration showing lumbar spondylosis, mechanical back pain, radicular pain at L3-4 and L2-3 with adjacent level syndrome. The operation was a posterolateral fusion and stabilization at L3-4 and L2-3.

Exhibit 11

Surgical illustration showing postoperative results. Pedicle screws were delivered bilaterally at L2-3 and L3-4. They were connected with titanium rods and locked down with locking screws.
