Medical Illustration | Lumbar Fusion, Multiple Cervical Fusions

Case Type:

Motor Vehicle

Area of Injury:

Back, Neck

Overall Objective:

Attorney Ronald Rozenkranz from Finkelstein & Partners was looking to illustrate back and neck damage his client suffered after he was rear ended by a distracted driver.  Attorney Rozenkranz also wanted to showcase the medical treatment his client had to endure as a result.

Our Work on the Case

Exhibit 1

Mixed board showing multiple level disc degeneration with broad disc/osteophyte complex compressing the thecal sac but without cord compressing.

Exhibit 2

Surgical Illustration showing vertical skin incision made from C4 to C7, and  C5-6 discectomy.

Exhibit 3

Surgical Illustration showing C4-5 and C7 discectomy, partial corpectomy at C4 and C7, arthrodesis and fusion with allograft C4-5, C5-6, C6-7, and internal fixation with Atlantis titanium C4-C7.

Exhibit 4

Sagittal view of the cervical spine showing degenerative endplate changes, spondylosis, endplate irregularity, partial incorporation of grafter material, solid bone fusion, degenerative endplate changes, and partial incorporation of graft material.  Also included is a posterior view of the cervical spine showing levoscoliosis.

Exhibit 5

Illustration showing right neck exploration, including evacuation of hematoma, and tracheotomy tube change.

Exhibit 6

Illustration showing surgical incision made from C2 distally to T1, C3-C7 facetectomy, and placement of pedicle screws.

Exhibit 7

Medical Illustration showcasing decortication of lateral massses and posterior lamina at C3-C7, placement of BMP and bone extender sponges, and  placement of drain.

Exhibit 8

Medical Illustration depicting small broad-base central disc protrusion noted at L5-S1.

Exhibit 9

Surgical Illustration showing L4-S1 surgical incision, L5-S1 laminectomy, and S1 foraminotomy.

Exhibit 10

Surgical Illustration showing placement of pedicle screws at L-5, S-1, and decortication and autograft placement.

Exhibit 11

Medical Illustrations of the lumbar spine showing an L-1 compression fracture, anterior wedging, reduced vertebral height, pedicle screws and rods, and desiccated disc. A second Illustration shows the posterior view of the lumbar spine including existing pedicle screws and rods, and a broken cross link bar.

Exhibit 12

Surgical Illustration showing the release of neck contractures and adjacent tissue transfer.

Exhibit 13

Illustrating depicting fluoroscopically guided bi-lateral C3-4, C4-5, C5-C6 facet denervation.

Exhibit 14

Illustration showing fluoroscopically-guided, catheter-directed  lumbar epidural steroid injection.

Exhibit 15

Illustration showing fluoroscopically guided percutaneous implantation of spinal cord stimulation for electrode for a trial of spinal cord stimulation.

Exhibit 16

This Surgical Illustration shows a thoracic laminectomy and insertion of  spinal cord stimulator.

Exhibit 17

This is a Medical Illustration that shows an MRI of the cervical and thoracic spine depicting multilevel disc injury with loss of signal and disc thinning, and osteophyte complexes compressing the thecal sac.

Exhibit 18

This is a Medical Illustration that shows an MRI of the cervical spine which shows evidence of multilevel disc injury with loss of signal and disc thinning, and osteophyte complexes compressing the thecal sac.

Exhibit 19

This Surgical Illustration shows a C4-C7 ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion), along with posterior hardware.
